BETHLEHEM, PA – The York College volleyball squad capped a fantastic opening weekend with a pair of wins to earn the tournament championship at the Moravian Greyhound Premiere Volleyball Tournament on Saturday in Bethlehem, PA. The Spartans defeated the host Greyhounds 3-0 in their first match and finished off the tournament title with a 3-1 win over Swarthmore in their second match of the day.
York improves to 4-0 as they dropped just one set all weekend.
The Spartans defeated Moravian by scores of 25-23, 25-23, and 25-9. Senior Brittany Hicks (Dover, Pa./York Catholic) and junior Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) led the Spartan offense with double digit kills. Hicks drove home 11 kills while she also had 10 digs for her first career double-double. Huston added 10 kills, four digs and a block for York. Sophomore setter Allie Donahue (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) distributed 24 assists while she also had four aces and five digs. Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) paced the Spartans' defensive efforts with 18 digs.
Against Swarthmore, the Spartans earned the title by the scores of 25-20, 13-25, 25-19, and 25-22.
Freshman Ijeoma Igwe (Windsor Mill, Md./Seton Keough) exploded with 17 kills and a .343 attack percentage. Hicks and Huston both added ten kills while Hicks also had a second double-double with 15 digs. Donahue handed out 37 assists in addition to notching 22 digs and five service aces. Graziano was outstanding as the Spartans' libero as she recorded 38 digs while she also contributed three service aces. Cassie Miller (Odenton, Md./Arundel) also had a strong defensive effort with 20 digs for York.
Donahue and Graziano were named to the All-Tournament team for the Spartans.
York returns to action on Wednesday night when they travel to McDaniel College to face the Green Terror in a non-conference game. The match is slated for a 7:00 pm start.
