Volleyball Rolls Past Centenary in Tournament Opener
YORK, PA – The York College volleyball squad opened up their 2012 York College Volleyball Invitational with a 3-0 win over Centenary College on Friday afternoon in York. The Spartans improve to 5-16 overall while the Cyclones fall to 4-14.
The Spartans won the match by scores of 25-18, 25-22, 25-17.
In game one, the Green and White fell behind early before a 10-1 spurt gave them a 13-6 lead. The Spartan lead would not fall below three the rest of the way and reached a high of nine before the hosts would take the seven point game one victory.
In the second game, York jumped out to an early 5-1 lead. The Cyclones clawed their way back into the contest as they took a 16-13 lead courtesy of a 5-0 run. The Spartans answered with a 7-0 run of their own as they took a 20-16 lead. The Green and White lead would be trimmed to one but the Spartans scored the final two points of the match to secure the set win.
York jumped out early in the third match. York scored 16 of the first 22 points of the set to take the early 10 point margin. The Spartan lead remained in the high single digits until Centenary made a late run, cutting the York advantage to four at 21-17. The Green and White finished the match by scoring the final four points of the match to secure the win.
Freshman Emma Geisser (Derwood, Md./Magruder) and sophomore Noelle Bricker (Seven Valleys, Pa./Dallastown) paced the Spartan offense with nine kills each. Bricker hit .375 for the match while Geisser contributed five digs and two block assists.
Freshman Allie Donahue (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) handed out 26 assists, added six digs, three service aces, two kills and two block assists to the Spartan effort. Junior Kristin Sargente (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) led York's defensive effort with 11 digs.
Erika Chu led the Cyclones with 10 kills, a block solo and a block assist. Jelena Markovic added nine assists, five digs, two kills, and a service ace for Centenary.
The Spartans return to action on Friday evening at 9:00 pm when they host Eastern in the second round of the tournament.
