HOBOKEN, NJ – The York College volleyball squad dropped a pair of matches during the opening day of the Stevens Ducks Classic in Hoboken, N.J. on Friday night. The Spartans fell to Swarthmore 3-0, and Stevens 3-1.
The Spartans are now 2-10 overall while Swarthmore improves to 6-1 overall and the Ducks stand at 1-9.
In the Swartmore game, the Garnet earned a win by scores of 25-16, 25-20, and 25-19. The duo of Dani Mastroieni (Chalfont, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy) and Jessica Moyer (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) paced the Spartan offense with 10 kills each. Moyer contributed 10 digs for the double-double while Mastroieni chipped in with eight digs.
Sophomore Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) had a very efficient offense match with eight kills and one error in 13 attempts, good for a blistering .538 attack percentage. Freshman setter Allie Donahue (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) handed out 21 assists while she also had 12 digs.
Against Stevens, the Ducks posted the win by scores of 25-20, 25-16, 18-25, 25-16. Moyer recorded a team-high 12 kills and added 10 digs to pace the Green and White. Huston had another solid match in the attack with 11 kills and a .310 attack percentage.
Senior Ashley Rineman (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) had a match-high 20 digs while Donahue contributed 29 assists and 13 digs. Mastroieni added 10 digs and seven kills for the Spartans. Senior Melissa Patterson (Edgewater, Md./South River) had a career-high four solo blocks while she added three block assists and five kills for York.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they face Buffalo State at 12:00 pm followed by a contest against Kean at 2:00 pm.
