Spartans Suffer Two Five Set Losses at Dickinson

CARLISLE, PA – The York College volleyball team lost a pair of heart-breaking five game losses in the opening round of the Dickinson College Red Devil Invitational on Friday afternoon in Carlisle, PA. The Spartans dropped a 3-2 decision to Lycoming and then had to come back and again lost a 3-2 decision, this time to Michigan-Dearborn.

The Spartans are now 1-6 overall while Lycoming is 3-1 and Michigan-Dearborn is 4-2.

The match scores against Lycoming were 25-12, 25-21, 25-22, 25-13, and 15-11. The first set loss was one of the worst sets the Spartans have played all year but the Green and White got their feet underneath them and started to play much improved volleyball. The Spartans showed sparks in games three and four before falling behind early in the fifth set. The Green and White couldn't overcome an early 8-3 deficit in the 15-point fifth set as the Spartans dropped the match.

Senior Melissa Patterson (Edgewater, Md./South River) led the Spartans with 11 kills, a .381 attack percentage, one solo block and three block assists. Senior Dani Mastroieni (Chalfont, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy) added seven kills and eight digs for York. Freshmen setters Allie Donahue (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and Brandi Kinard (Seven Valleys, Pa./Spring Grove) split time as Kinard had 22 assists, two service aces, and seven digs. Donahue added 20 helpers and four digs. Sophomore Kristin Martinak (Hanover, Pa./South Western) registered a career-high eight kills and she did not commit and error in 18 attamps as she hit a blistering .444 for the match.

Senior Ashley Rineman (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) paced the Spartans' defensive efforts with 22 digs.

Bethany Richardson led the Warrior offense with 13 kills while setter Katelyn McKillop handed out 37 assists for Lycoming.

Against the Wolves from Michigan-Dearborn, the Spartans fell 22-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-14, and 17-15. The Spartans had led 11-6 in the fifth set before watching the Wolves come back and steal the win from York.

Mastroieni led the Spartans with 11 kills and 13 digs while junior Jessica Moyer (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) chipped in with seven kills and a career-high 20 digs. Donahue recorded a double-double with 15 assists and 15 digs for the Green and White. Kinard added 14 assists and eight digs. Rineman collected 28 digs for the Green and White.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday afternoon at 12:00 pm when they face Lebnaon Valley for the second straight tournament. They then face the host Red Devils at 2:00 pm.
