Diplomats Spoil Spartan Home Opener

YORK, PA – The York College volleyball squad made their 2012 home debut on Wednesday night. Unfortunately for the Spartans, it wasn't the result they were looking for as the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats downed the Spartans 3-1 in a non-conference contest at Wolf Gym. The Diplomats improve to 4-0 overall while the Spartans fall to 1-3 for the young campaign.

The game scores were 25-21, 21-25, 25-23, and 25-21.

Game one was a back and forth set, as neither team was able to establish any significant momentum. The teams were not separated by more than two points until the Diplomats took a 19-16 lead. That lead was the middle of a 6-0 F&M run that eventually pushed the lead to 22-16. The Spartans pulled to within three at 24-21 but that would be a little late as the Diplomats put the game away on the next point to seize game one.

The second game saw the Spartans fall behind 5-1 after just six points. The Green and White climbed back into the game and eventually took an 11-7 lead. The Dips came back and tied the set at 11. The pivotal third game was another closely played set. The Spartans trailed early but York rebounded to take a 6-3 lead. The Spartans pushed the lead to 11-8 before the Diplomats hit the Green and White with a game-changing 12-1 run as F&M took a 20-12 lead. It looked bad for York but the Spartans battled back to cut the Diplomat lead to 22-21 thanks to a 9-2 spurt of their own. The Diplomat run proved to be too much as they scored three of the final five points to take a 2-1 match lead.

The fourth game provided another entertaining set for the crowd at Wolf Gym. The Diplomats pushed out to an early 8-4 lead. The Diplomats maintained the lead until York tied the set at 12. That came in the middle of a 5-0 Spartan spurt that eventually gave York a 15-12 lead. York maintained the lead until F&M tied the game at 17. The game would be tied twice more with the final time being at 21. The Diplomats peeled off the final four points of the match to close out the 3-1 win.
