CORTLAND, N.Y. – The York College Spartan volleyball team concluded its stay at the Cortland State Red Dragon Classic on Saturday by splitting their two matches to finish 1-3 for their 2012 opening weekend.
The Spartans fell to Lebanon Valley, 3-1, before bouncing back to down Pitt-Bradford, 3-0, in the nightcap.
Against the Flying Dutchmen, the Spartans fell 25-21, 25-11, 24-26, and 25-20. The Spartan offense was led by senior Dani Mastroieni (Chalfont, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy) and junior Jessica Moyer (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) as they each tallied a team-high eight kills. Mastroieni contributed 10 digs, a service ace, a block assist and an assist. Moyer chipped in with nine digs and three block assists.
Freshman Allie Donahue (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) handed out 21 assists while she also registered seven digs, four kills, and three service aces. Senior Ashley Rineman (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) tied Mastroieni for the team lead in digs as she also had 10 for the match.
In the win over Pitt-Bradford, the Spartans won 25-15, 25-22, and 25-19. Mastroieni and Moyer again paced the York offense as they both recorded 10 kills. Moyer notched the double-double with 15 digs while she hit .360 for the match. Mastroieni added six digs and three service aces.
Donahue had 18 assists, 13 digs, three kills and two service aces while fellow freshman Brandi Kinard (Seven Valleys, Pa./Spring Grove) dished out 11 helpers in her three games of action. Sophomore Kristin Martinak (Hanover, Pa./South Western) had a fine all around match as she had seven kills, four assists, five digs and two block assists. Rineman was the third Spartan in double figures in digs with 13.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday evening when they host Franklin & Marshall College in the Spartans' home opener. The match is slated for a 7:00 pm start at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.
