Spartans Drop Two on Opening Day

CORTLAND, NY – The York College volleyball squad opened their 2012 season with a pair of 3-0 losses during the opening day of the Cortland State University Red Dragon Classic in Cortland, NY. The Spartans dropped matches to Fredonia State and Richard Stockton on Friday.

In the loss to Fredonia, the Blue Devils downed the Spartans 25-22, 25-16, and 25-16. The Spartans hit just .060 in the setback and were paced by Jessica Moyer (Reading, Pa./Holy Name). Moyer had eight kills in 19 attempts, as she did not commit a hitting error in the match. She also had five digs for the Spartans.  Freshman Emma Geisser (Derwood, Md./Magruder) added five kills and four digs as no other Spartan had more than three kills.

Senior Ashley Rineman (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) notched a team-high 13 digs while freshman Allie Donahue (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) handed out 20 assists in her collegiate debut.

Against Richard Stockton, the Ospreys rolled past the Spartans 25-11 in games one and two before the Spartans picked up their play in the third before falling 25-23. The Spartans were led by senior Melissa Patterson (Edgewater, Md./South River) as she notched six kills for the Green and White offense. Donahue distributed 22 assists and eight digs, both team highs. Senior Dani Mastroieni (Chalfont, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy) recorded five kills, three service aces, and a pair of digs for York.

The Spartans return to the court on Saturday afternoon as they face Lebanon Valley at 12:00 pm. That game will determine whom the Spartans face in their final game of the weekend.
