Volleyball Sends Seniors Off in Style

YORK, PA – The York College volleyball team closed out their regular season with a sweep of Goucher College and Penn State-Berks on Saturday afternoon in York. The Spartans beat both the Gophers and Lions in three sets as they sent their four seniors out with wins in their last two matches at Charles Wolf Gymnasium. The Spartans conclude their regular season with a mark of 15-16 while the Lions are 21-7 and the Gophers are 11-23.

In the opening match against Goucher, the Spartans won 25-19, 25-17, 25-17. York was in control most of the match as the Gophers never really pushed the Spartans in the contest.

York was led by senior Heather Bucher as the outside hitter paced the Spartans with 17 points on 13 kills, five assists, two service aces, four block assists, and 12 digs. She hit a blistering .440 for the match. Fellow senior Julie Coombs was the other Spartan in double figures in scoring for York with 10.5 points. Coombs had nine kills, one service ace, one assist, a block assist and eight digs. Senior Cortni Rentzel had an outstanding match with 29 assists, four kills, eight digs, a solo block and a block assist. Junior Ashley Rineman paced the Spartan defense with 14 digs, four service aces, and two assists. Junior Melissa Patterson contributed seven kills and five block assists as she hit .429 in the match.

In the win over Penn State-Berks, the Spartans rolled to victory by the scores of 25-16, 25-14, and 25-14. The Spartans honored Bucher, Coombs, Rentzel and defensive specialist Jana Arentz prior to the match as the quartet was playing their final match in York.

In the opening set, the Spartans were up three points (7-4) and then proceeded to rip off a 7-2 run to take an eight-point (14-6) lead. The Spartan lead fluctuated between five and eight points before York ended the match with a nine point lead which was their largest advantage of the set. In the second game, the Spartans trailed 5-3 early. York put together a 10-2 run to take a 13-7 lead. The Lions trimmed the lead to four but York scored nine of the final 13 points of the game to take the 2-0 lead. The final set was almost identical to the second as York led 13-10 and then scored 12 of the final 16 points of the set to take the 11-point win.

Coombs led a balanced effort for York with 10.5 points on nine kills, two assists, six digs, a service ace and a block assist. Coombs hit .444 in her final Wolf Gymnasium match. Bucher added 9.5 points on eight kills, seven digs, three block assists, and one assist. Rentzel was again outstanding as she had five kills, 29 assists, and 10 digs as she hit .714 for the match. Freshman Katie Huston added six kills, a solo block and a pair of block assists. Junior Dani Mastroieni came off the bench to tally two kills and five service aces in her one set of action.

The Spartans now begin the second season on Tuesday night when they travel to Frostburg State University to face the Bobcats in the opening round of the 2011 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. The match in Frostburg, MD is set for 7:00 pm.
