COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – The York College volleyball squad concluded their two-day stay at the 2011 Molten Spike It Up Classic hosted by Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO. The Spartans split their two matches for the day, falling to Chapman University 3-1 before downing Webster College 3-0 in their fourth and final match of the weekend.
The Spartans are now 11-13 overall.
In the opener against Chapman, the Spartans lost 23-25, 25-6, 25-22, and 25-22. Freshman Katie Huston and sophomore Jessica Moyer led the Spartan offense as they both notched nine kills. Huston hit .429 for the match while she also had five digs and four block assists. Senior Heather Bucher chipped in with eight kills, 13 digs, two block assists, one service aces, and three assists. Senior Cortni Rentzel dished out 35 assists while she also had 11 digs, two kills, two service aces, and four block assists. Junior Ashley Rineman collected 20 digs to pace the Spartan defense.
York hit .095 for the match including -.171 in the second set when they tallied just six points. Chapman ended the match hitting .202 including .385 in the second set.
Against Webster, the Spartans won all three sets 25-22. York received big efforts from Bucher and fellow senior Julie Coombs. Bucher registered 13 kills, 15 digs, four assists, a pair of service aces and one block assist. Coombs had 12 kills, 17 digs, one assist, a service ace and a block solo. Coombs hit .233 for the match. Rentzel had 43 assists and nine digs while Rineman recorded a match-high 25 digs for York. Rineman was named as the Spartans' representative to the All-Tournament team.
The Spartans hit .188 for the match, their highest attack percentage since the September 24 match against Salisbury.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday night when they host Frostburg State in a key conference clash. The action is slated for a 7:00 pm start at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.
