Spartans Compete at 2011 Molten Spike It Up Classic in Colorado

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – The York College Spartans opened play in the 2011 Molten Spike It Up Classic hosted by Colorado College. The Spartans dropped both of their matches at the highly competitive tournament, falling to UC Santa Cruz 3-1 in the opener before falling to nationally ranked Colorado College, 3-0, in the nightcap. The Spartans are now 10-12 for the 2011 campaign.

In the opening match against UC Santa Cruz, the Spartans fell 25-21, 25-16, 19-25, and 25-10. Freshman Katie Huston led York with seven kills, one service ace, a solo block and three block assists for a team-high 10.5 points. Senior Julie Coombs added 10 points on 10 kills. Junior libero Ashley Rineman recorded a match-high 25 digs to pace the Spartan defense. Senior Cortni Rentzel dished out 22 assists while she also had three kills, three digs and a pair of service aces.

Against #13 Colorado, the Tigers downed the Green and White 25-14, 25-19, and 25-19.  York hit just .027 for the match as they had 22 kills and 19 errors in 110 attempts. Conversely, the Tigers hit .203 for the match with 45 kills and 20 errors in 123 attempts.

The Spartans were led by junior Melissa Patterson as she tallied seven kills in 13 attempts with two errors as she hit .385 for the match. Bucher and Huston each added five kills while Bucher paced the squad defensively with 15 digs. Rineman chipped in with 11 digs while Rentzel had 17 assists, three kills and three digs.

The Spartans return to action in the tournament at 12:00 pm eastern time on Saturday as they face Chapman University in their third round tournament match. York then closes out its stay with a 4:00 pm match against Webster University.
