Sea Gulls Top York in Spartan Tournament Finale

YORK, Pa. – The York College women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss today against the Salisbury University Sea Gulls in the finals of the 2011 York College Spartan Volleyball Invitational. The match went into four sets that resulted in the Sea Gulls securing the tournament championship 25-20, 24-26, 25-23, 25-20. The Spartans fall to 10-7 on the season while Salisbury improves to 16-1.

In game one, the Sea Gulls came out firing in all cylinders and maintained the lead throughout the whole game. Sam Seifert led the attack for Salisbury and gave them the 25-20 victory.

The second set was a thrilling one on both sides of the court. The Spartans started the set with kills from Jessica Moyer and Heather Bucher. Two beautiful digs by Ashley Rineman kept those rallies alive for the Spartans allowing Cortni Rentzel to set the hitters. The Spartans had the lead for most of the set strongly due to the attacks from Moyer, Bucher, Katie Huston, and Julie Coombs. Salisbury retook the lead and extended it to 19-16. After a Spartan timeout, York refocused and Moyer and Huston supplied the Spartans with two big kills. The pair then combined for a block on the Sea Gulls attack, which led to the end of the match. Huston finished the game with an ace that gave the Spartans a 26-24 win.

The third set was very similar to the first. The Sea Gulls maintained the lead the entire game after York started 1-0. The Green and White battled with the Sea Gulls, however Salisbury captured a 25-23 victory.

In game four, the Spartans came out looking to even the match. The first half of the game proved even as kills from Bucher and Moyer led the Green and White. After the Spartans tied the game at 15, the Sea Gulls again refocused and took the lead back with kills from Sam Seifert who dialed in 15 kills for the match. Salisbury went on to capture a 25-20 win in the fourth game to take the match.

Rentzel dished out 45 assists to five different players on the Spartan squad. Bucher tallied in the most kills with 15 while Huston followed with 10. Noelle Bricker, Coombs, and Moyer provided the other attacks for the Green and White. Huston and Rentzel combined for three aces in the match while Rineman led the team with 16 digs. Coombs, Rentzel, and Bucher also notched double digit digs.

Aside from Seifert's 15 kills, Carley Todd and Chelsea Glowacki each recorded ten kills for the Sea Gulls. Lindsey Saltzman provided 29 assists while Todd, Michelle Meehan, and Kelly Vieira each posted 12 digs.

The Spartans return to action on Thursday, September 29, when they host St. Mary's (Md.) in a 7:00 pm Capital Athletic Conference contest.
