YORK, PA - The York College volleyball team picked up right where they left off from Friday with a 3-0 win over Centenary College in the final pool play match of the 2011 York College Spartan Invitational on Saturday. The Spartans have now won four straight as the Spartans improve to 10-6 overall. Centenary falls to 6-11.
The set scores were 25-14, 25-21, and 25-13.
In the first game, senior Cortni Rentzel started off the set serving seven points in a row including two aces. York dominated the set and won 25-14. Freshman Noelle Bricker added three kills and Julie Coombs chipped in with two aces and a kill.
In game two, Centenary gave York a close set. Centenary was down 16-12 and came back to tie York, but York ran away with the game after a kill by freshman Jackie Schwarm kick started a Spartan spurt as the Green and White picked up the four point set win. Bricker added four more kills in the set as she has flourished in her new role in the starting rotation. Senior Heather Bucher and sophomore Jess Moyer both added two kills during the set.
The third game Centenary had their first lead in any of the previous two games but the only had it for a brief time. After York gained the 3-2 lead, they never looked back and took the set 25-13. Freshman Katie Huston got in on the action with four kills for the Spartans.
This win for the Spartans was a great team effort by everyone. Huston had a team-high with 10 kills and Bricker had total of 9 kills. Rentzel added 31 assists along with 5 service aces and 13 digs. Junior libero Ashley Rineman collected 11 digs for York's defense.
The Spartans conclude the tournament on Saturday at 4:00 pm when they face CAC rival Salisbury in the championship round of the tournament. The Sea Gulls captured the two team's previous meeting, 3-1, in York on September 6.
