YORK, PA – The women's volleyball team captured a victory against SUNYIT Wildcats in the first round of the York College Volleyball Tournament. The green and white won in four games by scores of 25-22, 22-25, 27-25, and 25-13. With this win the Spartans improve to an overall record of 8-6. The Wildcats are now 8-6 overall.
In game one, the Spartans were slow out of the gates. Once the Green and White got into a rhythm, setter Cortni Rentzel was able to use her experience to spread the ball to all of her hitters. Heather Bucher provided the first kill coming off a nice set from Rentzel. The kill from Bucher gave the Spartans a 7-6 lead that they were able to keep for the rest of the game. The Spartans never had a big cushion in the game, which allowed for an action packed game. The freshman Katie Huston provided the kills and a key block that was needed to help the Spartans take game one, 25-22.
In game two, the Wildcats came out with a lot of confidence that was led by their senior Juleah Vedder. Vedder was able to connect with her setter and contribute to a 25-22 victory for her Wildcat team.
The third set was very similar to the first two sets. Both teams came out very competitive and striving for a victory in the set. The Spartans kept the lead in the beginning of the set by taking the largest lead of the set, 10-6. The lead slowly started to diminished as the Wildcats made a fight to retake the lead. The Wildcats tied the game at 17 and forced the Spartans to use a timeout. Coming out of the timeout freshmen outside hitter Jackie Schwarm smashed a kill to give the Spartans the spark they needed. Once again the Wildcats did not back down and they retook the lead at 25-24. With the Spartans back against the wall they found comfort from Bucher as she spiked the ball to tie the game at 25. The last few points of the match were gained by nice digs by Bucher and Rentzel, which ended with a kill by freshman Noelle Bricker to end the set with a 27-25 victory.
The fourth set was all focused on the Spartans. The Wildcats kept the game close at 7-7 then the Spartans started the grab the upper hand. A solo block from Huston started the Spartans rally of seven points to extend the lead to 15-8. Huston also provided the Spartans first ace of the match in this 7-point span. Libero Ashley Rineman came up with huge digs all throughout the match that resulted in key points for York. The Spartans cruised for the rest of the game capturing a 25-13 victory that ended with a kill from Schwarm.
The Spartans attack was very spread-out, consisting of 6 players with over 5 kills. Bucher and Schwarm combined for 21 kills and Huston, Bricker, Jessica Moyer, and Julie Coombs contributed for most of the other attacks. Schwarm was a big spark as a freshman as she had the highest hitting percentage of the match at .562. Rentzel tallied in 49 assists to provide her senior leadership once again. Rineman and Bucher combined for 32 digs in the match.
