ARLINGTON, VA – The York College volleyball squad got back on the winning track with a 3-2 Capital Athletic Conference win over Marymount University on Tuesday night in Arlington, VA. The Spartans won by scores of 25-19, 18-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-10. The Spartans improve to 7-6 overall and 2-1 in the CAC while the Saints fall to 3-9 overall and 0-3 in the league.
The senior tandem of Heather Bucher and Julie Coombs paced the Spartans as they each had 10 kills for the York. They both also got the job done defensively as Coombs had 16 digs while Bucher chipped in with 15. Bucher also had three aces, two assists and a block assist. Coombs contributed two aces, three assists, a solo block and a block assist. Senior Cortni Rentzel dished out 41 assists while she also had 13 digs and a season-high tying five kills. Junior libero Ashley Rineman led the Spartans' defensive effort with 23 digs.
The Spartans notched a season-high 78 digs, as a team while the win was their first five-set victory of the year.
Marymount received 12 kills from Johanna Hummel while Emily Shultis and Erin Allison each contributed 11 kills. Melissa Warren handed out 42 assists while Michelle McCormick had a team-high 15 digs.
The Spartans return to action on Friday as they host the Spartan Volleyball Invitational. The action kicks off at 3:00 pm while the Spartans play their first match in the tournament at 5:00 pm against SUNYIT.
