Spartans Split Day One at Dickinson

CARLISLE, PA – The York College volleyball squad split their two matches during the opening day of the Dickinson College Red Devil Volleyball Invitational on Friday in Carlisle, PA. The Spartans defeated previously unbeaten Lycoming 3-0 in the opener before falling to University of Michigan-Dearborn in the nightcap.

The Spartans downed the Warriors 25-13, 25-20, and 25-21 before the Wolves beat the Green and White 25-22, 23-25, 25-20, and 25-15. York is now 3-3 overall while Lycoming is 3-1 and Dearborn is 6-5.

In the opener against Lycoming, senior Julie Coombs paced the Spartans as she had 10 kills and 12 digs as she hit .400 for the match. Senior Heather Bucher led the Spartans with 11 points on nine kills, a service ace, two block assists and eight digs. Senior setter Cortni Rentzel distributed 37 assists while she also had 11 digs. Junior libero Ashley Rineman had a team-high 14 digs for York. Freshman Katie Huston also played well offensively with seven kills in 15 attempts and one error for a .400 attack percentage.

York finished the match hitting .272 while they also had 62 digs in the win.

In the nightcap, the Spartans struggled offensively. York hit .113 for the match as the Wolves proved to just be a little too much for the Green and White. Bucher had a season-high 14 kills in a career-high 40 attempts while she also had 11 digs, five assists, and a service ace for a team-high 17 points. Sophomore Jessica Moyer contributed 9 kills and three block assists for 10.5 points. Rentzel had 33 assists while Rineman notched a team-best 17 digs.  Coombs contributed 14 digs and nine kills.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday afternoon as they face Lebanon Valley at 1:00 pm followed by a match with the host Red Devils at 3:00 pm.
