Volleyball Opens Campaign With 3-0 Win at Messiah

GRANTHAM, PA – The York College volleyball squad opened their season with a 3-0 win at Messiah College on Thursday night in Grantham, PA. The Spartans won by scores of 25-15, 25-20 and 25-18. York has won the last three season openers against the Falcons.

The Spartans featured a very balanced offensive attack as three players each recorded seven kills to pace the offense. Junior Melissa Patterson and freshman Katie Huston each had seven kills and just one error. Senior Heather Bucher added seven kills while she also had nine digs, and five assists.

Senior setter Cortni Rentzel handed out 27 assists while she also contributed 11 digs and a service ace. Senior Julie Coombs chipped in with six kills, 10 digs and a block assist. Junior libero Ashley Rineman recorded 10 digs for the Green and White.

The Spartans hit .165 for the match while they tallied five service aces, one solo block, and four block assists.

York returns to action on Saturday when they host Westminster (Pa.) and Elizabethtown in a non-conference tri-match. The Spartans play Elizabethtown in the opening match at 11:00 am followed by a match against Westminster at 3:00 pm. The Blue Jays and Westminster play the middle match at 1:00 pm.
