Spartans Win 15th Straight as Green and White Captures Tournament Title

YORK, PA – The York College volleyball squad captured their third in-season tournament title with a 3-0 demolition of a talented Virginia Wesleyan squad on Saturday afternoon in York. The Spartans earned the championship of the 2010 York College Spartan Volleyball Invitational and en route, won their school-record 15th consecutive match.

The Spartans won by scores of 25-19, 25-18, and 25-8. York is now 16-1 overall while the Marlins fall to 11-3.

The Green and White came out of the gate a little shaky as the confident Marlin squad jumped out to an early five-point advantage. The Spartans surged ahead and took the lead for good late in the set as the tone was set for the remainder of the match. The Spartans broke open the second set midway through game and then blitzed the Marlins in set three to earn the championship.

The balanced Spartan attack was led by senior Alysse Beshore as she had a team-high nine kills for the match. Junior Heather Bucher played another all around great match with seven kills, 11 digs, three service aces and two assists in the victory. Bucher did not make an attack error in the match as she hit .368 for the contest. Senior Alishia Waltermyer was also very potent offensively with eight kills and no errors in 17 attempts, which converted into a .471 attack percentage.

Setter Cortni Rentzel was her steady self with 33 assists and 10 digs for yet another double-double. Reigning CAC Player of the Week Ashley Rineman turned in another tremendous defensive effort with 28 digs while she also had a service ace and a kill.

The Spartans will put their win streak on the line on Thursday September 30 when they travel to St. Mary's to face the Seahawks in a huge CAC contest. The match is slated for a 7:00 pm start. Each squad got to see a little of each other this weekend as the Seahawks placed third at the tournament with their five-set win over Carnegie Mellon.
