YORK, PA - After handing out over 90 assists in a trio of matches this week, York College volleyball sophomore setter Cortni Rentzel (Mt. Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) has been selected for this edition of the Spartan Athlete-of-the-Week for the week of October 26 through November 1.
The Spartans posted a deceptive 1-2 record over the previous seven days, a mark that could have easily been 3-0.
York's victory came in their final Capital Athletic Conference tilt of the season, besting visiting Hood College 3-0. Rentzel handed out eleven assists in that match, as the Green and White cruised to the shutout win.
Against Moravian this past Saturday, Rentzel distribued 35 helpers. The Spartans nabbed game one 25-17 before narrowly falling by four points in the second stanza as the Greyhounds won the match over the next two sets.
The Green and White then took two-loss Lebanon Valley to the brink, stretching the match to five games. Rentzel handed out 45 helpers, tying her third-highest total of the season. Down 2-0, the Spartans battled back to take sets three and four but fell by a mere five points in the final frame.
For the season, the sophomore has posted 920 assists at 9.48 helpers per game over her 97 sets played. Rentzel has appeared in 29 of the Spartans' 30 matches in 2009, starting 28 of those contests.
With their regular season complete, Rentzel and the York squad return to the court on Tuesday, November 3, for the Capital Athletic Conference tournament first-round. The Green and White host St. Mary's in the opening round of the playoffs, a match set for 7:00 pm at York's Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center.
