Spartans Split Elizabethtown Tri-Match Saturday
ELIZABETHTOWN, PA - The York College volleyball squad split a pair of matches at the Elizabethtown College tri-match on Saturday afternoon in Elizabethtown, Pa. The Spartans dropped the opener to the host Blue Jays before bouncing back to down McDaniel in the nightcap.
The Blue Jays swept the Spartans 25-13, 25-18, and 25-20 in the opener. The Spartans hit a paltry .033 in the first set before rebounding to hit .150 in the second. The Spartans dipped back down to .128 in the third set as they suffered their first loss of the year.
Sophomore Julie Coombs (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) and junior Alishia Waltermyer (Brogue, Pa./Red Lion) each banged out seven kills to pace the Spartans. Heather Bucher (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) led the Spartans with 7.5 points in the match as she had five kills, two service aces, eight digs, and a block assist. Sophomore Cortni Rentzel (Mt. Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) handed out 25 assists while she also had six digs. Freshman Ashley Rineman (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) paced the Spartans’ defensive effort with 18 digs.
In the nightcap, the Spartans defeated the Green Terror 25-23, 25-17, 21-25, and 25-19. The Spartans hit over .200 in the first and fourth sets as they finished the match hitting .171.
Junior Alysse Beshore (York, Pa./Northeastern) was brilliant in the match as she tallied 16 kills, hit .483, three service aces and three block assists. Beshore accumulated 20.5 points for the Spartans. Waltermyer also played well with 14 kills, two block assists, and three digs. Waltermyer added 15 points in the win. Bucher chipped in with eight kills, three assists, eight digs and a solo block. Rentzel dished out 33 assists in three sets while sh also had nine digs. Rineman continues to be a defensive force with 24 digs and six service aces for the Green and White. Coombs added five kills and 12 digs.
The Spartans, who are now 2-1, return to
action on Wednesday evening when they host Gettysburg College in a
non-conference match. The action is set to begin at 7:00 pm in
Charles Wolf Gymnasium.
