ALLENTOWN, PA-The York College women’s volleyball squad concluded their stay at the 2009 Muhlenberg College Buttermaker Classic in Allentown, PA on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans split their two matches for the day with a 3-0 loss to the host Mules in the opener followed by a 3-2 win over MIT in the nightcap. That split allowed the Spartans to finish third in the eight-team tournament. York is now 5-3 overall for 2009.
In the straight set loss to Muhlenberg (25-17, 25-15, 25-16), the Spartans were never able to get on track as their two match win streak was snapped. The Spartans hit a paltry .116 for the match while the Mules were more efficient. Hitting .333 for the contest.
The Spartans were paced by junior Alysse Beshore (York, Pa./Northeastern) as she continued to play well for the Green and White. Beshore banged out eight kills while she also had a block solo. Junior Alishia Waltermyer (Brogue, Pa./Red Lion) added six kills and a block assist. Freshman Ashley Rineman (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) led the York defense as she recorded ten digs. Senior Amanda Rouillard (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) came off the bench to hand out 16 assists in two sets while Cortni Rentzel (Mt. Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) had 12 assists in one set. Senior Jaclyn Davis (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) played well off the bench as she had six kills and six digs in two sets of play.
The Spartans had nine reception errors and six service errors in the match, greasing the skids for the Mules’ victory.
In the third-place game, York outlasted MIT 25-16, 25-20, 19-25, 19-25, and 15-9. The Green and White were much better on the attack as they hit .279 for the match. Freshman Melissa Patterson (Edgewater, Md./South River) was impressive in the middle for York as she hit .769 with 10 kills and no errors in 13 attempts. Beshore added 11 kills and no errors in 20 attempts as she hit .550 for the match. Beshore also had seven block assists and a service ace for a team-leading 15.5 points. Waltermyer banged out 14 kills in addition to a pair of block assists. Sophomore Heather Bucher (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) contributed 12 kills, three assists, five digs and three block assists for 13.5 points. Rentzel handed out 45 assists in addition to recording 13 digs for the double-double. Rineman led York with 18 digs while senior Amanda Clemens (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) added 14 digs of her own. Sophomore Julie Coombs (Leonardstown, Md./Leonardstown) was the fourth Spartan in double figures in digs with 13.
Beshore was named to the All-Tournament team for her outstanding efforts in the Spartans’ four matches. She hit .434 with 42 kills, four service aces, 10 digs, and 12 blocks in her 14 sets played. She made just four errors in 83 attempts as she paced York with 52.5 points for the weekend. Beshore served at 95.9% for the weekend, making just two errors in 49 attempts.
York returns to action on Wednesday evening
when they host Salisbury University in the Capital Athletic
Conference opener for both squads. The match is slated for a 7:00
pm start in Charles Wolf Gymnasium in York.
