Spartans Split Two Matches During Best Western Westgate Invitational

YORK, PA – The York College volleyball squad finished second at their Spartan Best Western Westgate Invitational at Charles Wolf Gymnasium in York on Saturday. The Spartans won their first match of the day defeating Messiah 3-1 before falling to tournament champion Lebanon Valley, 3-0, in their final match of the tournament.

In the 27-25, 24-26, 25-14, 25-16 win over Messiah, the Spartans were paced by junior Alysse Beshore (York, Pa./Northeastern) led the squad with 12 points on eight kills, three service aces, two block assists in addition to her five digs. Sophomore Heather Bucher (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) contributed 11 kills, 11 digs, four assists, and a block assist for 11.5 points. Senior Jaclyn Davis (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) added 10 kills and a solo block to the Green and White effort. Setter Cortni Rentzel (Mt. Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) handed out 43 assists while she also had six kills, nine digs, a service ace and a block assist. Freshman Melissa Patterson (Edgewater, Md./South River) chipped in with nine kills while fellow frosh Ashley Rineman (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) collected a team-high 16 digs.

In the 25-7, 27-25, 25-20 loss to Lebanon Valley, the Spartans found themselves down early as they dropped a lopsided first set. The second set started in a similar manner before York rebounded to come back, eventually tying the game at 24 before the Flying Dutchmen scored three of the final four points of the set. The third set was also hard fought but the guests had enough of an edge to down the Spartans in three.

Junior Alishia Waltermyer (Brogue, Pa./Red Lion) led York with eight kills, two block assists and a service ace for 10 points. She was the only Spartan in double figures in the match. Rentzel added 24 assists, four kills, and nine digs while Rineman had 12 digs as she was the only Spartan in double figures in that category. Bucher chipped in with five kills, eight digs, and two service aces.

The Spartans take to the road on Tuesday night as they head to Fredericksburg, VA to face the University of Mary Washington Eagles in a huge Capital Athletic Conference contest. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
