Spartans Fall in Four at UMW

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The York College volleyball squad suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the University of Mary Washington Tuesday evening in a Capital Athletic Conference tilt. With the loss, the Spartans fall to 10-6 on the year (2-2 CAC) while the Eagles move to 12-4 (2-1 CAC).

The talented Eagles, who sport five players who are 5'10" and above, topped their guests in four games. The hosts took the match in four courtesy of 25-20, 25-15, 27-25, and 25-17 games.

The Spartans did own a 10-3 advantage in the first set before Mary Washington stormed back to the take the first frame. Following a second set loss, the York squad held a 23-19 lead before they bested the Eagles in extra points 27-25. The fourth stanza proved all Mary Washington as the hosts finished the match with an eight-point fourth-frame margin.

For the Green and White, Julie Coombs (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) paced the squad offensively as she continues to have a solid sophomore campaign. Coombs posted a team-best 12 kills on the evening while contributing eleven digs and a pair of block-assist.

Senior Jackie Davis (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) joined Coombs in the double-digit ranks as she notched ten kills to her credit. Davis hit .600 for the match as she converted on 15 of her attempts. Alishia Waltermyer (Brogue, Pa./Red Lion), who currently sits atop the Spartan leaderboard with 148 kills, added seven kills against Mary Washington.

Sophomore Cortni Rentzel (Mt. Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) continues to grow into her role in her first season as York's full-time setter. She dished out 39 assists in the loss to the Eagles and now sports 517 helpers for the year.

Ashley Rineman (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) led the Spartan defensive effort with 20 digs while Heather Bucher (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) contributed 13.

The Spartans, who had rattled off five-straight victories before their current two-game losing streak, will look to get back into the win column next Wednesday. With the weekend off from competition, the Green and White will now prepare for CAC foe Gallaudet. York hosts the Bison in a 7:00 pm contest on October 7 at the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center.
