Spartans Fall in Three to Geneva
HUNTINGDON, PA – The York College volleyball squad opened their stay at the Wid Guisler Invitational hosted by Juniata College with a 3-0 loss to Geneva College on Friday evening in Huntingdon, PA. The scores were 25-22, 25-20, and 25-19. The Spartans fall 16-9 overall while the Golden Tornados improve to 16-8 with the victory.
In the opening set, the Golden Tornados captured an early 10-5 lead. The Spartans battled back and hit Geneva with an 8-0 run to take a 13-10 lead. Geneva responded with a 5-0 spurt of their own, giving them a 15-13 advantage. The set continued to be close as it was tied at 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20 before the Golden Tornados captured three of the next four points to take a 23-21 lead. The Spartans trimmed their deficit to 23-22 before Geneva won the final two points to take set one.
The second set saw Geneva jump on the Spartans early as they led 12-3. Geneva eventually took a 10-point lead at 15-5 but York began to battle back, trimming the Geneva lead to 19-13 on an Alishia Waltermyer (Brogue, Pa./Red Lion) kill. York cut the lead to three late at 23-20 but the Spartans ran out of time as the Golden Tornados captured the final two points to put the Spartans’ collective backs against the wall.
Geneva got off to another fast start in set three as they led 16-5. The Golden Tornados weathered a 9-2 Spartan run that cut their lead to 18-14. Geneva responded to the Spartan spurt with a game-changing 6-2 run that gave the visitors a 24-16 lead. York scored the next three points but the Golden Tornados needed just one point and Laura Zerbe provided that with a kill as Geneva secured the three set win.
The Spartans were led by Waltermyer as she banged out nine kills to go along with a solo block. Senior Jaci Davis (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) added eight kills as she hit a team-high .200 for the match. Sophomore Heather Bucher (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) added five kills and nine digs for York. Sophomore Cortni Rentzel (Mt. Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) handed out 24 assists while she added two digs. Freshman Ashley Rineman (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) led the Spartans’ defensive effort with 19 digs while she also had a kill, an assist and a service ace for YCP. Sophomore Julie Coombs (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) chipped in with 15 digs while Jana Arentz (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) contributed 10 digs.
The Spartans hit a meager .036 for the match with 29 kills and 24 errors in 137 attempts.
Adriane Blake led Geneva with 15 kills as she hit .368 for the match. Brianna Mixter notched 24 digs for the Golden Tornados while Zerbe had six kills, seven digs and a pair of service aces.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday afternoon when they face Carnegie Mellon University and the host Eagles of Juniata. The Spartans play Carnegie Mellon at 1:00 pm followed by a date with Juniate at 5:00 pm.
