ST. MARY’S CITY, MD-The York College women’s
volleyball squad opened up their 2008 Capital Athletic Conference
slate with a 3-0 loss at St. Mary’s College on Tuesday
evening in St. Mary’s City, MD. The Seahawks improve to 6-1
overall with the win while the Spartans fall to 4-4 as they have
lost three straight. The conference match was the first for both
squads. The set scores were 25-15, 25-16, and 25-20.
The Seahawks blew out the Spartans in the first two sets as York
did not do themselves many favors offensively. The Spartans
hit -.030 in both of the first two sets making nine errors in the
first set and seven errors in the second. They finally posted a
positive attack percentage in the third set but still fell short by
five points.
The Spartans had just 25 kills for the match as junior
Jaclyn Davis (Cherry Hills, N.J./Cherry Hill East)
led the squad with six kills. Sophomore Alishia Waltermyer
(Brogue, Pa./Red Lion) added five kills but also had five
errors as she hit an uncharacteristic .000 for the game. Junior
libero Amanda Clemens (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest)
led the defensive charge as she recorded eight digs as the Spartans
just had 24 in the match. Freshman Heather Bucher
(Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) handed out eight assists while
she also had a pair of aces and a pair of digs.
Becca Tursell paced the Seahawk offense with nine kills and two
block assists. Katie Ewing hit a blistering .421 as she had nine
kills with no errors in her 19 attempts. Sarah Gregorini added nine
kills and a match-high 12 digs. Jenn Feldmann handed out 17 assists
in addition to four digs and three aces.
The Spartans return to action on Friday evening as they travel to
the Lebanon Valley College Tournament. The Spartans play
Philadelphia Biblical at 5:00 pm on Friday followed by a 7:00 pm
contest against the host Flying Dutchmen.
