Spartans Post 30 Wins in Memorable 2007 Campaign

YORK, PA – Earning the program’s highest win total in 15 seasons, the 2007 edition of the York College volleyball team put together a sensational 2007 campaign. The Spartans tied the school record with 30 wins, posting a stellar 30-6 mark.
Included in York’s 30 victories are three in-season tournament championships. The Spartans took the title in the Muhlenberg College Buttermaker Classic, the Spartan Best Western Westgate Invitational, and the Susquehanna Crusader Classic. Over these three tournaments the green and white posted an outstanding 13-0 record winning 39 of 43 games.
“Winning three regular season tournaments was a first for our program,” DuMars said. “The 30 wins has really put our team where we need to be to move forward in establishing a winning attitude and a regionally powerful program.”
A steady veteran presence combined with an influx of quality newcomers proved lethal for Spartan opponents throughout the season. Senior setter Katie Hertz’s consistent play and outstanding leadership paced the York squad while Lindsay Schorner, Alishia Waltermyer, and Heather Toth made big impacts in their first season sporting the green and white.
Hertz closed out her Spartan career earning first team All-Capital Athletic Conference honors and being selected as a second-team District II Academic All-American. Hertz also added a honorable mention All-Mid-Atlantic Region selection to her stupendous senior campaign. The setter handed-out 1,455 assists and led the CAC in helpers per game averaging 11.93. Hertz started all 36 matches for the Spartans as she paced her squad with 51 service aces while chipping in 139 kills. A great all-around player, she also registered 440 digs ranking her third on the team.
“Katie is very physically talented,” DuMars noted. “She has been a great worker all four years.”
Schorner burst onto the scene in 2007 after transferring to York as a sophomore. The outside hitter was named the CAC Rookie-of-the-Year and was selected to the all-conference first team. She also garnered first-team All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors for her work this season. Schorner hammered home a team-leading 467 kills ranking her second in the CAC. Not only an offensive force, the sophomore notched 492 digs good for second on the squad and ninth in the conference.
“Lindsay is a great addition to the team,” DuMars commented. “She has enormous talent as well as leadership skills.”
Waltermyer established herself as a quality front row player in her freshman season. The middle hitter nailed 415 kills and hit a blistering .322 for the year. She also proved a formidable force on the defensive end, registering a team-leading 80 total blocks.
Toth improved steadily throughout her freshman campaign and became one of the Spartans’ top young players. The middle blocker led York with 18 solo blocks, ranking second on the squad with 74 total. She also added 176 kills playing in all 36 matches.
“Our biggest impact and biggest surprise this year was how well our middle hitters played,” DuMars said of Waltermyer and Toth. “Both stepped up in a huge way to fill those vacant spots. Our offense was able to be much quicker and more diverse because of their ability to adjust so quickly to the collegiate game.”
Sophomores Casi Brough, Jaclyn Davis, and Amanda Clemens each made significant offensive contributions during the season. Brough backed up a great freshman campaign with 270 kills in her second season. Davis and Clemens emerged as solid contributors notching 95 and 66 kills respectively.
Coach DuMars was extremely pleased with the play of the Spartan back row this season. Senior libero Laura Krajewski recorded a team-high 526 digs averaging 4.5 per game. Senior defensive specialists Amy Livelsberger and Lindsay Crider also contributed mightily to York’s outstanding year.
“Our back row players did an amazing job this year,” DuMars commented. “We were able to run a very fast offense largely due to the outstanding passing that we got from our back row.”
The conclusion of a great 2007 campaign means the 2008 season is quickly approaching. DuMars is confident that her squad will build upon the success of this season and is already looking toward the future.
“We have a great group coming back in the fall and have
some key positions to fill,” DuMars said. “I am
looking forward to an even greater 2008.”
