Schorner Named Spartan Athlete of the Week

YORK, PA-York College is proud to announce that volleyball player Lindsay Schorner has been named the Spartan Athlete of the Week for September 17-23, 2007. This is the second time Schorner has secured the honor this season. The first came for the week of September 3-10.

Schorner, a sophomore outside hitter from Spring Grove, Pa. and Spring Grove High School, led the Spartans to a 6-0 record for the week as they defeated Villa Julie 3-1 on Tuesday before capturing the championship of the Spartan Best Western Westgate Invitational in York over the weekend. In the tournament, the Spartans defeated Albright, 3-0, and Virginia Wesleyan, 3-1, on Friday night. York then notched victories over Alvernia (3-0), Marietta (3-1), and Lebanon Valley (3-0) on Saturday to earn the tournament championship, their second tournament title of the year.

Schorner had another outstanding week in leading the Spartans to a 6-0 week. She began her week with 15 kills and 13 digs in the win over Villa Julie. She followed that with 12 kills and one error in 22 attempts against Albright. Schorner also had five digs and two service aces against the Lions. In the victory over Virginia Wesleyan, Schorner registered 19 kills, 11 digs, one ace, and one assist in four games. In the match against Alvernia, Schorner had six kills and 10 digs in just two games played. Schorner recorded 18 kills, 13 digs, three service aces, and a pair of assists as the Spartans advanced to the championship game. In that championship game, Schorner had 13 kills, 21 digs, two service aces, and one assist. For the week, Schorner hit .295 with 83 kills (4.15 kpg), 73 digs (3.65 dpg), a .938 service percentage, and a .908 serve receipt percentage. Schorner tallied 94 points for the week for York.

Spartan head coach Sue DuMars knows that Schorner has been a key to the Spartans’ great start.

 “Lindsay is really blosooming as an on-the-court leader,” says DuMars. “She has been playing great and the rest of the team feeds off her energy and excitment.

For the season, Schorner is hitting .251 for the green and white as she averages 3.84 kills and 4.21 digs per game. She has played in 63 games, accumulated 242 kills, 265 digs, 15 assists, 23 aces, and six blocks. She has a team-best 268.5 points for the Spartans. York is now 15-3 overall and 2-0 in the CAC.

Schorner is the daughter of Jeff and LeeAnn Schorner and is an English Education major.
