Katie Hertz Named the Spartan Athlete of the Week
YORK, PA-York College is proud to announce that women’s volleyball player Katie Hertz has been named the Spartan Athlete of the Week for October 15-21, 2007.
Hertz, a senior setter from Glenville, PA and Delone Catholic High School, led the Spartans to a perfect 5-0 week and their third in-season tournament title of the year. York began the week with a 3-0 win over Hood in Capital Athletic Conference play. The Spartans then opened their stay at the Susquehanna Crusader Classic with 3-1 victories over Susquehanna and Richard Stockton. The green and white then closed out the week with 3-0 wins over Rowan and Catholic. The Spartans are now 27-5 and winners of eight straight.
Hertz began her week with 15 assists, two kills, five digs, and one service ace in two games in the win over Hood. In the opening round of the Crusader Classic, Hertz handed out 58 assists, notched four kills, 13 digs, and five block assists. Against Richard Stockton, she had 55 assists, five kills, and 14 digs. In the win over Rowan, Hertz handed out 24 assists while she also had 10 digs and one kill in two games. In the tournament clinching victory, Hertz had 37 assists, eight kills, 12 digs, three blocks, and one service ace as she was named the Tournament MVP. For the week, Hertz averaged 12.60 assists, 1.33 kills, 3.60 digs, and 0.60 blocks per game.
Spartan head coach Sue DuMars is pleased with the recent play of her senior setter.
“Katie is an outstanding athlete that has had a very good senior year,” says DuMars. “She has been a good leader for this young team and I am excited to see how we perform over the final weeks of the season. Katie had a great week and it was nice to win our third tournament of the year.”
For the season, Hertz has handed out 1300 assists, good for an average of 11.93 helpers per game. She is averaging 1.16 kills per game while she owns an attack percentage of .227. Hertz is third on the team in digs with 383, good for an average of 3.51. She has played in 109 of the Spartans’ 114 games this year. Hertz has also recorded 45 service aces and 41 total blocks for the Spartans.
