Spartans Grab Third in CAC with 3-1 Win Over Seahawks

YORK, PA - The York College volleyball team picked up their sixth Capital Athletic Conference win of the season on Tuesday evening with a 3-1 victory over the visiting St. Mary’s Seahawks (30-24, 23-30, 36-34, 30-27).  The Spartans improve to 28-5 on the year with a 6-2 CAC record.  St. Mary’s falls to 24-6 and 6-2 in conference play.

The Spartans came out an inspired group notching the 30-24 game one win.  Lindsay Schorner (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) put the Seahawks on their heels early tallying several kills in the game including a pair of rockets.

In the second game, St. Mary’s recorded five of the first seven points taking the wind out of the Spartan’s sails.  Grabbing an 8-7 lead, the Seahawks never looked back and won the second frame 30-23.

By far the best game of the night came in the third stanza.  Finding themselves down 18-13, the Spartans battled back eventually taking at 29-27 lead but unfortunately could not close out St. Mary’s in regulation and the game went to extra points.  Up 35-34, York libero Laura Krajewski (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) made an incredible sprawling dig that led to a Jaclyn Davis (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) kill for the game victory.

Facing a deflated St. Mary’s squad in the fourth game, the Spartans forced the Seahawks into a pair of time-outs during the frame as all the momentum belonged to the green and white.  Alishia Waltermyer (Brogue, Pa./Red Lion) finished off the match for the Spartans as the freshman tallied her 13th kill of the evening.  Waltermyer’s kills gave the Spartan’s the 30-27 game victory and the 3-1 match win.

Schorner led the green and white with 22 kills while Waltermyer notched 13 kills and three block assists.  Davis played extremely well for the home squad garnering ten kills in just two games including the crucial score in the match’s third frame.  Katie Hertz (Glenville, Pa./Delone Catholic) continued her strong 2007 production as she registered 55 assists to go along with 14 digs.

Krajewski played one of her better matches of the season recording 31 digs.  The senior also gave the visitors fits on her serve, garnering three service aces and causing numerous Seahawk errors.

For St. Mary’s, Katie Ewing led the attack with eleven kills while also contributing a pair of block solos and a trio of block assists.  Claire Kodan and Sarah Gregorini each recorded double-digit kills with ten apiece.  Jenn Feldmann and Megan Graydon shared the setting responsibilities handing out 24 and 22 assists respectively.  Defensively, Becca Tursell was a force at the net turning away numerous Spartan attempts en route to five block solos and seven block assists.  Jackie Reid added 15 digs and Katie Obal kept 14 attempts off the floor for the Seahawks.

The Spartans ninth straight win ensures the green and white with at least the third seed in the upcoming CAC tournament.

Closing out the regular season at home, the Spartans take to the court on Saturday as they host former conference foe Catholic in a 2:00 pm showdown.
