Sea Gulls Remain Perfect in CAC with Victory over Spartans

YORK, PA-The York College volleyball team suffered a hard-to-swallow Capital Athletic Conference loss to Salisbury University, 3-1, on Wednesday night at the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center in York. The Sea Gulls remain perfect in the CAC at 5-0 while they are now 20-6 overall. The Spartans had their four match win streak snapped as they fall to 19-5 overall and 4-2 in the conference. The Spartans are 0-2 at home in the CAC while they are 4-0 on the road in the league.

The Spartans captured game one 30-28 before Salisbury blitzed the hosts 30-24 in game two. The second game was not as close as the score indicated as Salisbury held an early 15-6 lead only to have the Spartans rally late in the game for a few cosmetic points. In game three, the two teams went back and forth before Salisbury pulled away. The two squads were not more than three points away from each other until the Sea Gulls fashioned a 9-2 spurt that turned a 21-21 tie into a 30-23 win in game three. The Gulls closed out the match with a 30-27 win in game four.

Salisbury was paced by Stacey Krebs as she tallied 17 kills, 11 digs and four block assists. Rachel Downes added 13 kills, four service aces, and nine digs to the Salisbury attack. Libero Gabby Long notched a match-high 31 digs while she also had two service aces and a pair of kills. Nicole Massarelli was the third Sea Gull with double figure kills as she recorded 10 while she also had five block assists. Senior Katie Hertz (Glenville, Pa. /Delone Catholic), who is ranked 15th in the nation in assists, handed out 38 helpers with nine kills, 16 digs, a service ace and a solo block.  Middle hitter Alishia Waltermyer (Brogue, Pa. /Red Lion) banged home nine kills but hit a season-low .029 for the match as she had eight errors in 35 attempts, a very uncharacteristic match for the standout freshman. Senior libero Laura Krajewski (Livonia, Mich. /Stevenson) pitched in on defense with 16 digs while fellow senior, Lindsay Crider (Greencastle, Pa./James Buchanan), added 11 digs of her own.

The Spartans hit just .061 in the match as they had 52 kills and 40 errors which doubled Salisbury’s 20 miscues for the evening. The Spartans’ attack percentage is the second lowest mark of the year while their 40 errors tied a season-high.
