ALLENTOWN, PA-The York College volleyball squad won the 2007 Muhlenberg College Buttermaker Tournament title on Saturday afternoon as the Spartans concluded the tournament 4-0. The Spartans defeated PSU-Altoona 30-26, 30-24, and 33-31 and then completed the perfect weekend with a 30-27, 30-27, and 30-24 win over the host Mules from Muhlenberg. The Spartans improve to 6-1 overall and they have now won a tournament championship two years in a row.
In the win over the Lions, sophomore Lindsay Schorner (Spring Grove, Pa. /Spring Grove) continued her impressive start to the season with 13 kills and 19 digs for the double-double. Freshman standout Alisha Waltermyer (Brogue, Pa. /Red Lion) added 12 kills and a pair of block assists. Senior setter Katie Hertz (Glenville, Pa. /Delone Catholic) handed out 41 assists, notched 13 digs, six service aces, and five kills. Senior libero Laura Krajewski (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) notched 15 digs while fellow senior Amy Livelsberger (Hanover, Pa. /Delone Catholic) added 12 digs to the Spartan defensive effort.
Against Muhlenberg, Schorner and Elizabeth Sempervive (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) each banged out 14 kills. Schorner recorded another double-double with 15 digs. Waltermyer was the third Spartan in double figures in kills with 10. Hertz dished out 42 assists while she also had 16 digs, three aces, and three kills. Senior Lindsay Crider (Greencastle, Pa./James Buchanan) collected 11 digs while Livelsberger added 10 digs of her own.
Sempervive was selected as the tournament MVP while Waltermyer was named to the All-Tournament team. Hertz and Schorner also had outstanding weekends for the green and white.
The Spartans open up Capital Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night as they travel to Mary Washington. Game time in Fredericksburg is set for 7:00 pm.
