Schorner and Hertz Earn CAC First Team Honors; Schorner named Rookie of the Year
YORK, PA–York College volleyball players Lindsay Schorner (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) and Katie Hertz (Glenville, Pa./Delone Catholic) have been named to the Capital Athletic Conference First Team as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. In addition to earning the first-team honor, Schorner was selected as the conference Rookie-of-the-Year.
Schorner had an outstanding first year in the green and white. She finished the season with a .221 attack percentage, 467 kills, and 492 digs. Her 3.83 kills per game led the Spartans while her 4.03 digs per game were second on the squad. She also scored 512.5 points for the season, good for a team-leading average of 4.20 points per game. Schorner posted 25 double-doubles for the year as she earned the CAC Player-of-the-Week three times this season. She notched career highs with 22 kills against St. Mary’s on October 23 and with 27 digs in the match against PSU Altoona on September 15. She received serve at 95.5% for the season while her service percentage was 96.1% with 34 service aces in 122 games played.
Spartan head coach Sue DuMars was glad to see Schorner receive conference recognition.
“Lindsay is a tremendous competitor that can cover as much of the court defensively as we need her to,” says DuMars. “At 5’5”, she is one of the strongest hitters in the conference. Lindsay has leadership qualities and a great positive attitude that will only keep us moving forward in the next season.”
Schorner was second in the CAC in kills per game while she was eighth in the league in digs per game.
The all-conference accolade is long in coming for the Spartans as she has been one of the most unheralded players in the conference. Hertz handed out 1,455 assists, good for a conference leading 11.93 assists per game. She also collected 139 kills, 440 digs, 51 service aces, and 43 total blocks for the green and white. She was named the Spartan Athlete of the Week on October 22.
Hertz finished her career with 3,759 assists (7.73 apg), 707 kills (1.45 kpg), a .212 attack percentage, 222 service aces (0.46 sapg), 1,561 digs, (3.21 dpg), and 209 blocks (0.43 apg). She accumulated 1,046 points for her stellar career.
DuMars was happy to see Hertz finally get conference honors.
“Katie has been a great worker all four years and was able to put up some incredible numbers this season,” says DuMars. “She is one of the better athletes we've had in our program and her talent and work ethic will be missed.”
DuMars will be charged with replacing Hertz and three other seniors from this year’s 30-6 squad. York is not without returning talent as Schorner will headline a group of four returning starters for 2008.
