YORK, Pa. – York College women's track & field standout Jasmine Smith has been selected as the 2012 Capital Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Rookie of the Year. Smith is the second Spartan in as many years to garner the honor as Laura Rowlands collected the accolade last season.
"Jasmine had a tremendous year," Spartan head coach Erick Camodeca said. "We felt she definitely deserved the honor. It began in the indoor season, namely the inaugural CAC Championships, and then she was able to keep that going during the outdoor campaign. "
Smith was phenomenal for the Spartans throughout the 2012 campaign. A talented student-athlete with superb potential, Smith captured her first CAC Outdoor title by winning the long jump at the annual CAC Outdoor Championships held at Frostburg St. earlier this month. The rookie leapt a conference-championship winning 5.39 meters (17' 8.25") in just her first season.
Smith also collected a pair of second-place finishes for the Green and White at those CAC Championships. Individually, she took the runner-up spot in the 100-meter dash where she ran a 13.13 in the finals. In the 4x100 relay, Smith teamed up with Rowlands, Donteris Spence, and Deborah Fidele to not only snag a second-place finish but also establish a new Spartan-record with a time of 49.67.
Providing outstanding performances for the Green and White throughout her rookie year, Smith started her collegiate track & field career with a tremendous indoor season. She broke four program records in indoor events during the season, establishing new Spartan-bests in the 55, 60, and 200 meters while also setting a new record in the long jump.*
During the outdoor campaign, aside from her strong efforts in the CAC Championships, Smith set a new program record in the long jump during the season with a leap of 5.45 meters. Later in the year, Smith popped a tremendous 5.69-meter (18' 8") leap to set yet new Spartan-best in the event.
* Smith ran 7.49 in the 50, 7.99 in the 60, and 27.21 in the 200.
