FROSTBURG, Md. – The York College women's track & field team captured third place overall at the 2012 Capital Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by Frostburg St. University. The Spartans captured three individual victories on Sunday and set a new school record in the 4x100 relay.
Senior Mandy Parshall collected one of those victories as she closed out her stellar York career and secured her sixth CAC individual outdoor track title. In her final CAC Championships, Parshall picked up the victory in the 1500 meters, an event she won as a freshman and sophomore while taking second last year, with a strong 4:52.64, less than a second off her own school record time. Parshall's fantastic career finishes with nine All-CAC track accolades while additionally she was named the 2010 CAC Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year after winning the championship that season.
Sophomore Laura Rowlands and rookie Jasmine Smith each proved instrumental in the Spartans' team performance at this year's league championships. Each recorded a first- and second-place finish while aiding York's 4x100 relay squad to a program-record time. Rowlands snagged yet another CAC crown winning the high jump with a height of 1.57 meters (5' 1.75") to best the field. Having already won the triple jump yesterday, Rowlands has now won a total of seven individual titles, including high-jump and triple-jump wins during the 2012 indoor championships, during her brief career.
Smith collected her first CAC Outdoor Championships triumph with a 5.39-meter (17' 8.25") leap in the long jump. The talented freshman garnered the top spot while Rowlands secured second (5.31 meters / 17' 5.25") as the Green and White have a tremendous 1-2 punch in the event. Individually, Smith registered a second in the finals of the 100-meter dash where she put down a 13.13 to add eight points to the York ledger. She also took fifth in the 200 with a 27.47.
In the record-breaking 4x100, Rowlands and Smith combined with Donteris Spence and Deborah Fidele to post a Spartan-best 49.67. Taking the runner-up spot, this same group had previously set the mark at 50.72 on April 21, but was able to lower that time by over a full second at the league championships.
In the javelin, the Spartans picked up 14 points as Brittany DeManda and Fidele posted second- and third-place finishes, respectively. DeManda, who was strong in the javelin this season, garnered second overall with a launch of 37.12 meters (121' 9") while Fidele recorded a 3.57-meter (109' 10") toss.
Misty Parshall secured third for the Green and White in the 1500 meters with a 4:57.02. Caroline DeLany and Emily Abell snagged top-five finishes in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as DeLany posted a fourth-place 12:55.15 and Abell a fifth-place 13:45.98.
