Miller Establishes New 10K Program Mark; York in Third Place Overall
FROSTBURG, Md. – The York College women's track & field squad finished the first day of competition at the 2012 Capital Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships – hosted by Frostburg St. – with a individual victory, a second-place nod, and runners qualify for finals in a pair of sprints. Overall, the Spartans sit third out of the six participating institutions, as the Green and White has amassed 27 points.
Sophomore sensation Laura Rowlands led the way for the Spartans on day one. The talented Rowlands successfully defended her 2011 title in the triple jump with a repeat triumph in 2012. Her trio of bounds at this year's meet totaled 11.71 meters (38' 5"), blasting her winning distance from a year ago (11.25 meters) and setting a new school record in the event.
Rookie Jessica Miller, who finished second in the indoor 5,000 meters at the 2012 CAC Indoor Championships, took down the school record in the 10,000 meters at the outdoor meet. The Spartan freshman ran to a second-place 41:34.07, picking up a valuable eight points for the Green and White, a time that snapped the previous record of 42:00.00 set by Tuesday Wilson last season . Teammate Nicole Danielewicz proved not far behind Miller as the sophomore corralled fifth-place points in the 10K with a time of 42.08.02.
In a pair of sprint-qualifying races, the Green and White saw two runners get through to the finals in both the 100- and 200-meter dash events. Rookie sensation Jasmine Smith ran a strong 12.83 in the 100 to qualify second entering Sunday's finals while classmate Deborah Fidele nabbed third in the preliminaries with a 13.10.
The pair also qualified for the finals in the 200 meters. Smith posted a time of 26.66 to capture fourth heading into tomorrow's 200 final. Fidele secured fifth for the Spartans a she ran to a 26.80.
The pole vault saw Ashley Razzano snag four more points for the Spartan ledger as she took fourth overall in the pole vault. Razzano registered a time of 2.75 meters (9' 0.25"). Dana Mangano took fifth n the triple jump for York with a total distance of 10.39 meters (34' 1.25")
In the throws, Ashley Menniti recorded a sixth-place 34.71-meter toss in the hammer while she took ninth in the shot put at 9.16 meters (30' 0.75"). Junior Katie Shinn took seventh in the hammer with a 33.13-meter (108' 8") toss.
Back on Sunday, the Spartans and the rest of the CAC participating schools will look for a tremendous second and final day of the 2012 CAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
