Records Fall as Spartans Open Indoor Campaign

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The York College women's track & field squad opened their first official indoor season this Saturday at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa. The Spartans finished sixth out of the 13 Division III squads in attendance, totaling 31 points.

"It was awesome to see this group come together throughout the day," Spartan head coach Erick Camodeca said. "It was a great day to be around these kids."

Freshman Jasmine Smith put together a stellar showing in just her first collegiate meet as she wrote her name in the record book three times. She established the program mark in the 60-meter dash with a fifth-place time of 8.23. In the 200-meter dash, Smith ran to a 28.01, besting the former top Spartan time of 28.35 set last season, and garnered another fifth-place finish. In the 4x200 relay, Smith joined with Hannah Ritzman, Laura Rowlands, and Jackie Gibat to break the previous program record by over a second-and-a-half by notching a 1:55.58.

Fellow rookie Deborah Fidele notched a tremendous performance as she broke the Spartan 400-meter dash record. Fidele's time of 1:04.92 snapped the mark of 1:05.27 set last season. Fidele also anchored York's 4x400 squad, which took fourth place at the Ursinus meet. Fidele ran the final leg after Ritzman, Capri Jackson, and Korissa Lincoln ran their trips around the track, as the squad finished with a 4:26.99.

Rowlands, the 2011 Capital Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Rookie of the Year, grabbed third overall in the high jump. The sophomore posted a height of 1.52 meters in her first meet of the season.

Anna Spaniol embarked on her senior season with a pair of top-ten finishes. The seasoned Spartan ran to an eighth-place time in the 800 (2:37.99) and a ninth-place finish in the 400 (1:05.67) as she, according to Coach Camodeca, "looked strong, aggressive, comfortable, and confident."

Also in the 400, Jackson and Ritzman posted top-ten times. Jackson ran to an eighth-place mark with a 1:04.99 while Ritzman ran a 1:06.00 for tenth.

In the shot put Meaghan Jackson posted a ninth-place mark with a 9.89-meter toss while Ashley Menniti showed well in just her first collegiate meet with a 12th-place 9.69-meter result.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday, December 10, as they travel to Dickinson College. Start time in Carlisle, Pa. is slated for 10:00 am.
