Five Spartan Records Tumble at Paul Kaiser Classic
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The York College women's track & field team had a tremendous day at the 2011 Paul Kaiser Classic hosted by Shippensburg University. The Spartans set new program records in five different events while one of the marks proved a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Outdoor National Championships.
Laura Rowlands continued her simply fantastic freshman campaign as she provisionally qualified for the national championship meet by posting a triple jump distance of 11.50 meters. That provisional distance also proved a new school record in the triple as she took second overall at the Kaiser Classic. In the high jump, she posted a height of 1.64 meters to register third in the event. Aside from her performance on Saturday, Rowlands also had the opportunity to compete at this year's Penn Relays last Thursday. There she posted a 1.64-meter height in the high jump, tying her for 17th among the 24 participants as all 23 other competitors were from Division I institutions.
Senior Mandy Parshall lowered two school records on Saturday, posting new program-bests in the 5,000- and 3,000-meter races. Parshall notched a strong second-place finish in the 5k as she crossed the line in 18:46.44 while her new 3k mark came via a 10:56.32.
Rookie Kenyatta Redman put together a pair of fantastic showings in both the 100- and 200-meter sprints. The Spartan freshman notched school records in both events as she ran a 12.82 in the 100 and a 26.40 in the 200.
Caitlin Rizzardo's 3.11-meter height in the pole vault resulted in a seventh-place finish for the Green and White. Allyson Montello timed a 1:03.08 in the 400 and Katie Shinn tossed the hammer 30.92 meters.
York returns to action on Sunday, May 7, when they travel to New York, New York for the NYC Qualifying Challenge at Icahn Stadium. Start time is slated for 12:00 pm.
