YORK, Pa. – The York College Spartans women's track & field team received terrific news on Tuesday as freshman Laura Rowlands was named the 2011 Capital Athletic Conference Women's Track & Field Rookie of the Year. Rowlands proved a tremendously successful performer for the Green and White as she won a trio of individual titles – sweeping the jumping events – while also contributing in York's 4x100 relay triumph.
Despite the rain-soaked CAC Championships on Saturday, Rowlands put together a stupendous effort. The freshman won the high jump (1.60 meters), the long jump (5.08 meters), and the triple jump (11.25 meters). In the 4x100 relay, Rowlands ran the third portion of the race, teaming up with Allyson Montello, Kenyatta Redman, and Donteris Spence, as York won the event with a 52.29.
With her tremendous work, the Spartan freshman led the squad to a second-place finish, their best mark in the history of the program.
The talented rookie is no stranger to collegiate accolades as she was also named the Mason-Dixon Conference Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year back in February. Rowlands was also chosen as the conference's Women's Field Athlete of the Week on two separate occasions this season as well as having been twice selected as York's Spartan Athlete of the Week.
In addition to Rowlands' efforts, the Spartans added three more individual triumphs. Mandy Parshall collected her fifth individual title of her career, winning the 5,000 meters (19:13.58), while Kenyatta Redman nabs her first by taking the 100 meters (12.98). Loreta Tonuzi captured the javelin championship with a toss of 35.51 meters.
