YORK, Pa. – For the first time in the 2010-2011 academic year, the Spartan Athlete of the Week honor goes to two York College student-athletes. York College men's track's Ben Edwards and women's track's Laura Rowlands each led their squad to impressive finishes at the 2011 Capital Athletic Conference Championships held at York College.
Edwards was simply fantastic in his final league championships, leading the Spartans to their first team title since 1992. The senior hurdler won both the 110- and 400-meter hurdles events before helping the Green and White's 4x400 squad to triumph. In the 110 hurdles, Edwards raced to a winning time of 16.60 while his 400-hurdles time of 56.11 was over two seconds faster than second place. The 4x400, the final men's event of championships, saw Edwards run the third portion of the race. Taking the baton, the senior tucked in behind the leader before making his move to get the Spartans out front. He then handed off to anchor Le Von White who brought home the win in a total time of 3:28.36.
Rowlands, who was also named the Spartan Athlete of the Week back on February 21, put together an epic performance for the Green and White in just her first CAC Championships. Leading the York squad to a second-place finish, their best mark ever in the conference, the rookie Spartan won a trio of individual events while aiding in the 4x100 relay victory. Rowlands won the high jump with a height of 1.60 meters, the long jump with a leap of 5.08 meters, and the triple jump with a distance of 11.25 meters – over a ¼ meter better than second place. The 4x100 saw Rowlands run the third portion of the race, helping the Spartans to a winning time of 52.29.
