Relay Records Fall at Messiah Invitational
GRANTHAM, Pa. – In their final meet before next Saturday's Capital Athletic Conference Championships, the York College women's track & field squad competed at the Messiah College Falcon Invitational in nearby Grantham, Pa. The Spartans, who used the meet as a tune-up event, placed 10th out of the 16 squads in attendance snagging 33 points.
A pair of Spartan relay teams did set new school records during the Messiah Invitational as York's 4x100 and 4x800 squads establish new top times. The 4x100 crew of Allyson Montello, Kenyatta Redman, Laura Rowlands, and Donteris Spence crossed the line in 51.35 to take fifth and break the mark set last year of 51.60. The 4x800 record fell to Mandy Parshall, Megan Phillips, Anna Spaniol, and Rachel Berninger as they completed the race with a time of 10:02.72. Taking third in the event, that time set a new mark by over six full seconds as the previous record, set in 2010, was 10:09.02
Individually, Spaniol captured one of York's two best finishes of the day as she notched a second-place finish in the 3,0000-meter steeplechase. Her time of 12:15.43 just barely missed Delaware Valley's Tracey Forsythe's first-place time of 12:15.42.
That other runner-up spot went to Rowlands in the high jump. The rookie sensation leapt 5' 2" in the event to tally second-place points for the Green and White.
In the individual 800-meter run, Parshall snagged fifth for York with a 2:22.89. Phillips posted a 2:28.24 in the event while Berninger and Montello went 2:29.96 and 2:31.81, respectively.
Katie Shinn collected a sixth-place result in the hammer throw, registering a launch of 110' 7" while Loretta Tonuzi's 101' toss in the javelin was good for ninth.
The Spartans now turn their attention to next Saturday's CAC Championships. York is slated to host this year's conference championships on April 16 with action beginning at approximately 9:00 am.
