Rowlands Named Mason Dixon Women's Field Athlete-of-the-Year
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Freshman Laura Rowlands was named the Women's Field Athlete-of-the-Year as the York College women's track & field team finished fourth at the 2011 Mason Dixon Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on Sunday, February 20. The Green and White posted 50 team points on the day, taking the fourth spot out of the nine competing schools.
Rowlands was nothing short of fantastic as the rookie Spartan posted a banner day for the Green and White. Highlighting her efforts, Rowlands garnered the triple jump title with a distance of 11.27 meters (36' 11.75"). That result not only established a new school record in the event, but also gave the freshman a NCAA provisional cut as she looks for a berth into the NCAA National Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Adding to her performance, Rowlands also snagged second-place in the high jump with a leap of 1.61 meters (5' 3.25") and 12th in the long jump with a distance of 4.56 meters (14' 11.5").
As a squad, the Green and White topped a number of school-best marks as they put together a solid overall performance.
Mandy Parshall nabbed a new program record in the 800-meter run as she crossed the line in 2:25.04, garnering a second-place finish.
In the shot put, Meaghan Jackson established a new school standard with a 10.45-meter toss (34' 3.5") as she collected fourth overall. Fellow thrower Katie Shinn took seventh in the weight throw with a school-record 11.04-meter throw (36' 2.75").
Ally Montello and Kenyatta Redman brought down program marks in the 400- and 200-meter dashes, respectively. Montello, a senior leader for the Green and White, ran to a 1:05.27 time in the 400 to set the new standard while Redman puts her name in the record book with a 28.35 in the 200.
Joining Parshall in the 800, Megan Phillips registered a fourth-place finish with a 2:28.86 while Anna Spaniol finished right behind Phillips with a fifth-place 2:29.58.
Freshman Christy Guzenski and junior Kate Paczynski each collected top-ten finishes in the high jump. Guzenski placed fourth with a height of 1.51 meters (4' 11.5") while Paczynski nabbed seventh.
The Spartans' distance medley relay squad secured third for the Green and White as they totaled a 13:21.93.
The Mason Dixon Championships concludes the indoor portion of York's 2010-2011 slate. The Spartans open up their home outdoor campaign on Saturday, March 12, as they host the York Relays.
