Spartan Split Squad Competes at Delaware and LVC
NEWARK, Del. / ANNVILLE, Pa. – The York College women's track & field squad split their squad Saturday, sending contingents to the Thomson Invitational at the University of Delaware as well as the Lebanon Valley Invitational at Lebanon Valley College. The Spartans finished 13th out of the 24 Division I, II, and III squads at Delaware – competing in events against only Division II and III squads – and performed well at LVC while setting seven school records and tying two previous marks.
York's two best finishes at the Thomson Invitational came from a pair of Spartan freshmen. Laura Rowlands took third in the triple jump with a 34-foot, 0.75-inch result which broke the previous Spartan record. She also tied for sixth in the high jump, posting a leap of 4-feet, 11 inches.
Megan Phillips snagged a third-place finish of her own in the 1,000-meter run. The freshman crossed the line at 3:20.55.
Mandy Parshall, a four-time conference outdoor track champion, took fifth in the 1-mile run with a quality 5:37.97. In just her first indoor meet of her career, Parshall broke the Spartans' indoor mile record.
In the 4x800, Phillips and Parshall would combine with Allyson Montello and Anna Spaniol for a 10:29.85, giving them a fourth-place finish. That 10:29.85 crushed York's previous 4x800 record by over 20 seconds.
Individually, Spaniol took seventh in the 800 with a 2:32.62 while Montello came in 13th in the 400 with a 1:05.52, as she broke her own previous Spartan record in the event.
At the Lebanon Valley Indoor Invitational, the Spartans snagged a pair of triumphs as senior standout Caitlin Rizzardo and newcomer Christy Guzenski each picked up victories. Rizzardo, the three-time reigning Capital Athletic Conference pole vault champion, won her signature event as she posted a mark of 10-feet, a height which ties her own school record. Guzenski collected her win with a 5-foot leap in the high jump as the promising Spartan freshman tied Rowlands' school-best indoor mark.
Individually, Verde established new school records in the 300 meters (49.38) and the 500 meters (1:34.12).
Katie Shinn took third for the Green and White in the weight throw, making a new school-record toss of 35-feet, 6.5 inches. Meaghan Jackson, a Spartan newcomer this season, posted a 31-foot, 4.75-inch toss in the shot put to take fourth overall.
The Green and White are slated to return to action on Thursday, February 10. York is scheduled to travel to the Ursinus Indoor Invitational for a 4:00 pm meet.
