Green and White Travel to North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, FL – A group of York College women’s track & field student-athletes traveled to the University of North Florida to compete in the Spring Break Invitational. The Spartans went up against several Division 1 schools including Florida State, West Virginia, and Winthrop.

The Green and White’s best finish came from senior captain Alaina Smelko (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) in the triple jump. Smelko posted a 31’ 6.5” to garner 15th-place.

Ally Montello (Adamstown, Md. /Urbana) notched a 14’ 7.25” leap in the long jump while Smelko posted a 13’ 7” bound in the event. Montello would also compete in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, registering 14.27 and 28.90 times, respectively. Smelko tallied a 29.38 in the 200.

In the throws, Katie Shinn (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) recorded a 73’ 9” toss in the hammer while launching the discus 58’ 7”. Fellow newcomer Rebecca Homan (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) registered a 69’ 2” throw in the javelin.

The Spartans full squad officially opens the 2010 outdoor campaign on Saturday, March 13. The Green and White are slated to host the York College Spring Opener, which is scheduled for a 9:00 a.m. start.
