Spartans Complete 2010 Campaign with Alumni/Charity Open

YORK, PA – The York College women's track & field squad completed their 2010 slate last Saturday at the Spartans' annual Alumni / Charity Open, with the proceeds going to benefit the relief effort in Haiti.

The Green and White picked up 12 event victories during the meet to effectively close out a successful season.

Two of those wins came by way of sophomore standout Mandy Parshall (Dover, Pa./Homeschooled). Parshall won both the 800- and 1500-meter races, her signature events. The Spartan crossed the line in times of 2:36.46 and 5:14.50, respectively, to take first in both events.

Parshall would also contribute on York's victorious 4x400 squad. She anchored the crew of Allyson Montello (Adamstown, Md./Urbana), Andrea Taylor (York, Pa./Central York), and Alaina Smelko (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) as they combined to run a 4:20.85.

Taylor and Mackenzie Kauffman (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley) each snagged individual first- and a second-place finishes during their respective events. Taylor secured her victory in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:00.32. Her second-place came via the 200, a race in which she clocked a 27.59.

Kauffman picked up her triumph in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a 12:59.71 while her runner-up spot came in the 400 hurdles (1:25.86).

Staying in the sprints, senior Laura Zimmerman (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) won the 100 with a 13.42 while Elexis Engram (York, Pa./William Penn) finished second with a 13.57.

The 4x100 squad of Engram, Taylor, Montello, and Zimmerman picked up yet another Spartan triumph with a time of 51.60.

Senior Melody Parshall (Dover, Pa./Homeschooled), in her final home race of her career, won the 5,000-meter run, coming in with a time of 21:36.86.

Anna Spaniol (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) came in just behind Taylor in the 400 to finish with a time of 1:03.24. Chitom Henry (Philadelphia, Pa./Alexis I. Dupont) finished second in the 110 hurdles with a 17.79 while Corie Thompson (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) snagged a runner-up spot in the 3,000 steeplechase clocking in at 13:43.53.

The Green and White also performed exceptionally well in the field events, collecting four firsts.

In the high jump, Kate Paczynski (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) won the event with a 1.52-meter leap while Megan Verde (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) came in second with a 1.42-meter bound.

Caitlin Rizzardo (Jacobus, Pa./Dallastown) did as she had done all season, winning the pole vault with a 3.2-meter height while Smelko won the triple jump with a trio of bounds totaling 9.6 meters.

Rookie sensation Loreta Tonuzi (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) tossed the javelin 34 meters to take the victory, while fellow newcomer Courtney Lapp (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) took second with a 30.06-meter throw.

Mackenzie Dolan (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) captured the runner-up spot in the shot put with a toss of 8.63 meters.

With their season now complete, the York side bids adieu to their three seniors – Smelko, Melody Parshall, and Zimmerman. These three talented Spartans have helped the Green and White continue to build a solid program throughout their respective careers.

Despite the loss of these three, the Spartans return a slew of quality student-athletes including Rizzardo, Mandy Parshall and Tonuzi who were each individual All-CAC performers this season.
