SHIPPENSBURG, PA – The York College women's track & field team competed in the 2010 Paul Kaiser Classic at Shippensburg University on Saturday. Coming off their third-place finish at the Capital Athletic Conference Championships, the Spartans had a solid performance taking six top-ten finishes at the Kaiser Classic.
The Green and White's top finish came from freshman thrower Loreta Tonuzi (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan). The rookie tossed the javelin 35.41 meters to nab sixth in the event. Tonuzi, who finished second in the javelin at her first CAC Championships, improved on her mark from last Saturday by over 2.5 meters.
Fellow javelin thrower Courtney Lapp (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) recorded a 29.98 throw in the event.
Caitlin Rizzardo (Jacobus, Pa./Dallastown), the two-time reigning CAC pole-vault champion, posted a seventh-place finish. She recorded a height of 2.90 meters to record one of York's six top-tens.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, junior Mackenzie Kauffman (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley) posted another seventh-place mark for the Green and White. Kauffman registered a 12.56.71 time in the event.
York's third seventh-place finish came in the 4x100 relay. The squad of Elexis Engram (York, Pa./William Penn), Anna Spaniol (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough), Laura Zimmerman (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro), and Andrea Taylor (York, Pa./Central York) combined for a 51.83 to secure the top-ten finish.
Two-time CAC 800-meter champion Mandy Parshall (Dover, Pa./Homeschooled) recorded an eighth-place finish in the 800 on Saturday. In a field of 47 participants, Parshall crossed the finish line at 2:21.72.
The Green and White then nabbed another top-ten in the 4x400 relay. Allyson Montello (Adamstown, Md./Urbana), Taylor, Zimmerman, and Parshall traversed the 1600 meters in a time of 4:21.26 to register tenth-place.
In the 5,000-meter run, Melody Parshall (Dover, Pa./Homeschooled) finished just outside the top-ten with an eleventh-place time of 19:34.44.
Senior captain Alaina Smelko (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) registered 13th in the triple jump with a total distance of 10.03 meters. Kate Paczynski (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) tied for 15th in the high jump with a leap of 1.44 meters.
The Spartans finish out their 2010 campaign next Saturday, May 1. The Green and White are slated to host the York College Charity / Alumni Open in York beginning at 9:00 a.m.
