SALISBURY, MD – The York College women's track & field squad placed third overall at the 2010 Capital Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday in Salisbury, Md. The Spartans posted 88 team points while first-place Salisbury scored 265 and runner-up Mary Washington picked up 184.
The Spartans did secure a trio of CAC event titles on the day while taking second in two more.
Rizzardo, who set the conference record in the event last season, continues her reign atop the CAC pole vault standings as she picks up her third championship in three years. Rizzardo cleared 9' 5.75” to take the win in 2010 by six inches.
Parshall, the CAC Co-Rookie-of-the-Year in 2009, successfully defended her two titles from a season ago. The talented sophomore nabbed both the 800- and 1500-meter runs with times of 2:20.62 and 4:52.15, respectively. In the 800, Parshall cut over five full seconds off her championship time from 2009.
In addition to her individual accolades, Parshall helped York's 4x400 relay squad pick up second-place points. Allyson Montello (Adamstown, Md./Urbana), Andrea Taylor (York, Pa./Central York), Laura Zimmerman (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro), and Parshall combined to run a 4:15.16 in one of the Spartans' best events.
In the javelin, Spartan newcomer Loreta Tonuzi (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) posted a second-place finish for the Green and White. In just her first CAC Championships, Tonuzi launched the javelin 106' 11” to nab the eight second-place points.
Aiding the Spartan effort, Jesse Mast (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional), grabbed third in the pole vault with an 8' 0.5” leap. Alaina Smelko (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) took a third-place finish herself in the triple jump as she collected the six points for the Spartans. Smelko's trio of leaps totaled 35' 0.25” in the senior's final CAC Championships.
The high jump saw Kate Paczynski (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) clear a height of 4' 9.75” as she garnered a fourth-place finish.
Four more events brought fourth-place points to the Spartan side. Melody Parshall (Dover, Pa./Homeschooled) traversed the 5,000-meter run in 19:46.86, her best time of the 2010 outdoor season.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Mackenzie Kauffman (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley) ran to a 13:12.07 while Corie Thompson (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), who came in fifth in the event, posted a 13:18.21.
Montello added another fourth-place nod in the 400 meters by clocking a time of 1:03.03. Also in the event, Taylor came in fifth with a 1:03.41.
The 4x100 squad rounds out the fourth-place finishes by timing a 52.87. Elexis Engram (York, Pa./William Penn), Anna Spaniol (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough), Smelko, and Zimmerman combined in the event.
York collected a pair of fifths in two throwing events. The hammer throw saw Mackenize Dolan (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) toss it 104' 7” while Courtney Lapp (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) threw a 99' 10” launch in the javelin.
Back on the track, York picked up two sixth-place finishes in two very different events. Zimmerman grabbed a point in the 200 with a time of 27.42. Rookie distance standout Tuesday Wilson (York, Pa./Eastern York), in just her first CAC Championships, nabbed a scoring finish in the 10,000 meters with a 44:44.23.
Even though the CAC Championships are now complete, the Spartans continue on with the 2010 outdoor campaign with two more meets on the slate. York travels to Shippensburg University next Saturday for the Paul Kaiser Classic at 10:00 a.m. The Green and White then finish their season on Saturday, May 1 with their own York College Alumni / Charity Open.
