TOWSON, MD – The York College women’s track & field squad picked up their first team win of the 2010 campaign on Saturday at the Goucher Track & Field Classic. The Green and White, which posted 203 points to top four other schools, captured eight individual victories en route to the team triumph.
Melody Parshall (Dover, Pa./Homeschooled) gave the Spartans 10 first-place points in the 5,000-meter run. The senior standout registered a 19:48.36 in the event to lead the pack.
Sophomore Mandy Parshall (Dover, Pa./Homeschooled) continued her tremendous season as she won the 1500 yet again. Parshall crossed the line at 4:57.96 to nab first-place points for the Spartans. She also took second in the 800 meters with a 2:27.88.
Rookie distance runner Tuesday Wilson (York, Pa./Eastern York) won the 10,000 meters (46:30.90) while the 4x400 squad posted a victorious 4:17.63.
Four of York’s eight wins came in the field events. Loreta Tonuzi (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) nabbed the top spot in the javelin with a 33.57-meter toss to garner the Green and White’s best throwing finish.
Senior captain Alaina Smelko (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) took first in the triple jump (10.09 meters) while Kate Paczynski (Marriottsville, Md./ Liberty) recorded a 1.44-meter first-place leap in the high jump.
Caitlin Rizzardo (Jacobus, Pa./Dallastown) continues to post commanding performances in the pole vault as she won her signature event with a 2.88-meter height.
The Spartans also nabbed several strong finishes in those field events. Courtney Lapp (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) took second in the javelin (29.70 meters) and Ally Montello (Adamstown, Md./ Urbana) also secured a runner-up spot in the long jump (4.52 meters). Jessica Mast (Cape May, N.J./ Lower Cape May Regional) nabbed second in the pole vault with a 2.28-meter height. Mackenzie Dolan (Toms River, N.J./ Toms River East) and Megan Verde (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) took third in the hammer and high jump, respectively.
Back on the track, Corie Thompson (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) placed second in the steeplechase (13:02.13) while Anna Spaniol (Hillsborough, N.J/ Hillsborough) was the runner-up in the 400 (1:04.12).
Claudia Hess (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) and Laura Colantuono (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) went 2-3 in the 3,000 while Gabrielle Harbin (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) took third in the 800.
The Spartans return to action on April 10 when they travel to Grantham, Pa. for the Messiah College Falcon Invitational slated for 9:00 a.m.
