Spartans Open Outdoor Season Despite Gloomy Conditions
YORK, PA – On what could possibly be described as the dreariest day of 2010, the York College women’s track & field squad hosted the York College Spring Opener on Saturday. Six schools visited the Spartans’ home, despite the poor weather conditions, including Capital Athletic Conference foe Hood and former league member Goucher.
An unscored meet, the Green and White nabbed several top finishes as they performed admirably in the deluge of wind and rain.
York posted some of their best finishes in the distance events. Freshman Gabrielle Harbin (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) took the top spot in the 1500 meters with a 5:38.90 while cross country standout Corie Thompson (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) grabbed first in the 3,000 with a 13:03.10. Melody Parshall (Dover, Pa./Homeschooled), another outstanding cross country runner secured first in the 5,000 meters, crossing the line at 20:30.00 while rookie Tuesday Wilson (York, Pa./Eastern York), the only entrant in the 10,000, ran to a 45:17.37.
In the 800 meters, Amy Stickle (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) nabbed yet another top-spot with a 2:48.03 followed by Chelsea McCracken’s (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) 2:49.79. McCracken also finished third in the 1500 by clocking a 5:56.90.
Two more second-place finishes came from the legs of Laura Colantuono (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) in the 3,000 (13.03.29) and Claudia Hess (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) in the 5,000 (22:30.00).
Off the track, the Spartans collected three more firsts in the abbreviated field-event portion of the meet. The high jump belonged to sophomore Megan Verde (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) as she leapt 1.37 meters despite the slippery conditions. Kate Paczynski (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) followed Verde’s mark with a 1.32-meter jump of her own.
In the long jump, Ally Montello (Adamstown, Md./Urbana) garnered the top spot with a bound of 4.22 meters. Verde would follow Montello with a 4.13-meter leap.
Senior captain Alaina Smelko (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) nabbed her first-place finish in the triple jump, amassing a distance of 9.92 meters.
Spartan newcomer Loreta Tonuzi (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan), a member of York’s basketball team, posted a second-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 28.29 meters while Courtney Lapp (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) and Laura Zimmerman (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) threw 25.52 and 25.21 meters, respectively.
After the Spartans dry off, they will turn their attention to Friday’s Lebanon Valley Invitational, which is set for a 2:00 p.m. start in Annville, Pa.
