Parshall, Rizzardo Win; Spartans Compete at Battleground Relays
FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The York College
women’s track & field squad competed in the two-day
Battleground Relays hosted by the University of Mary Washington.
The Green and White picked up a pair of individual victories while
securing eight top-three finishes.
Junior Melody Parshall
(Dover, Pa./Homeschooled) grabbed a dominating victory in
the 5,000 meters. Parshall, who recorded a time of 20:01.41, won
the race by over 40 seconds.
Caitlin Rizzardo (Jacobus,
Pa./Dallastown), the reigning Capital Athletic Conference
pole-vault champion, recorded the meet’s best height in her
signature event registering 10’ 6” to take first.
Fellow pole-vaulter Anna Hershner (Glen Rock,
Pa./Susquehannock) took third in the event with a 7’
6” height.
York’s lone second-place
finish belonged to the Spartans’ 4x400 “A” squad.
The foursome combined for a solid time of 4:18.35 to secure the
second spot. The 4x800 and 4x100 teams notched third- (10:09.02)
and fifth-place (53.93) finishes respectively.
In the 400 hurdles, Rachelle
Geesey (Thomasville, Pa./Christian School of York)
recorded third in the event with a time of 1:20.59. Geesey also
took eighth in the 110 hurdles (18.54) while teammate
Katrina Cooper (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) notched
sixth in the event with an 18.39.
Megan Verde (Toms River,
N.J./Toms River North) notched a third-place finish of her
own in the high jump. Verde recorded a height of 4’ 5”
to take the #3 spot.
Mary Riley (Brookeville,
Md./Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart) followed
Parshall in the 5,000 meters, coming in fourth with a time of
21:11.04. In the 1,500 meters Corie Thompson (Ambler,
Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and Mackenzie Kauffman
(Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley) registered fourth- and
sixth-place finishes respectively. Thompson crossed the line at
5:27.29 while Kauffman clocked a 5:34.91.
In the javelin throw, Laura
Zimmerman (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) recorded a toss of
97’ 11” while she also picked up a tenth-place finish
in the 100 meter dash (13.93).
Caitlin Mahan (Delran,
N.J./Delran), one of the Spartans’ top throwers,
recorded top-eight finishes in each of the four throwing events.
Mahan’s best two finishes came in the discus and hammer
throws where she finished fourth by notching distances of 92’
9” and 105’ 3” respectively. Mahan also took
sixth in the javelin (93’ 4”) and eighth in the shot
put (29’ 1.25”). Mackenzie Dolan (Toms River,
N.J./Toms River East) grabbed sixth in the hammer
(102’ 1”) and seventh in the shot put (29’
4.5”).
In the triple jump, Alaina
Smelko (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) recorded a
32’ 9” distance for sixth place while Ally
Montello (Adamstown, Md. /Urbana) came in eighth with a
trio of bounds equating to 31’ 10.”
The Spartans now return to training
in preparation for next Saturday’s Goucher College Classic.
The meet in Baltimore is slated for a 10:00 am start.
