Smelko Leaps to Second Place as Spartans Open Indoors

SELINSGROVE, PA – The York College women’s track and field team captured eight top-15 individual finishes in Friday’s Susquehanna Indoor Meet at Susquehanna University.  

Sophomore Alaina Smelko (Punxstawney, Pa./Punxstawney) grabbed the Spartans’ highest finish of the day, earning second place in the triple jump with a leap of 32’6.5”. Teammate Allyson Montello (Adamstown, Md./Urbana) took eleventh in the event with a length of 30’5”.

Montello’s 15’4.25” performance in the long jump earned her a ninth place finish while junior Anna Hershner (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) took ninth in the pole vault with a height of 7’0.5”.

Freshman thrower Caitlin Mahan (Delran, N.J./Delran) rounded out the field events for the Spartans launching the shot put 28’4.5” to place fourteenth out of 26 athletes.

On the track, freshman distance runner Claudia Hess (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) logged the Spartans best individual finish grabbing fourteenth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 25:01.08.  Laura Colantuono (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) finished one spot behind Hess with a time of 25:57.14.

Melody Parshall’s (Dovers, Pa./Homeschooled) 6:00.08 time in the one mile earned her fifteenth out of 28 finishers.

The Spartans return to Susquehanna on Saturday, February 16 as the indoor meet begins at 10:00 am.
