GRANTHAM, PA - The York College women's track and field squad scored 31 points Saturday en route to finishing eleventh out of 17 teams at the Messiah College Invitational.
Sarah Becker (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) continues her strong senior campaign as she posted the Spartans' best finish of the day capturing third place in the hammer throw with a heave of 35.72 meters. Becker would earn a total of three top-ten finishes at the meet, as she also took sixth in the shot put with a toss of 9.62 meters while launching the discus 27.71 meters for a tenth place finish in the event.
Freshman throwers, Jessie Berry (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Pine Grove Area) and Caitlin Mahan (Delran, N.J./Delran) also put in solid performances. Berry's 29.05 meter distance in the discus was good for eighth. Mahan's 27.11 meter toss in the hammer earned her the event's ninth spot.
Allyson Montello (Adamstown, Md./Urbana), one of the Spartan's most talented athletes, joined Becker by also obtaining three top-ten finishes. The freshman came in ninth in the triple jump with a distance of 10.24 meters while leaping to a tenth place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 4.54 meters. Montello also grabbed tenth in the 100 meter dash crossing the line at 13.46.
Alaina Smelko (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney), a 2008 Spartan captain, bounded to a distance of 10.06 meters for eleventh in the triple jump. In the 5000 meter run, Melody Parshall (Dover, Pa./Homeschooled) finished in 20:44.03 which placed her ninth in the event. York's 4 x 400 meter relay team posted a time of 4:30.17, earning fifth place.
The Spartans will now spend the next week preparing for the Capital Athletic Conference Championships that are scheduled to be held next Saturday, April 19, at York's Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center.
